Recently, scientists at the CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM), Pulwama, successfully demonstrated that Apis mellifera can survive sub-zero temperatures.

About Apis mellifera

Apis mellifera, commonly known as the Western Honey Bee or European Honey Bee, is the most widely distributed and commercially important species of honey bee in the world.

It is regarded as the most extensively domesticated insect species and plays a crucial role in honey production, beeswax production, pollination services, and agricultural productivity.Because of its efficiency in pollinating crops, Apis mellifera is considered one of the most economically valuable insects for global agriculture.

Habitat and Distribution

Apis mellifera is native to Europe, Western Asia, and Africa. However, beginning in the seventeenth century, humans introduced this species to many other parts of the world.

Today, it is found across almost all continents, including Asia, Australia, North America, and South America. The species thrives in areas that provide an abundant supply of flowering plants. It commonly inhabits meadows, gardens, agricultural fields, and open woodland areas. it can also survive in grasslands, deserts, and wetlands, provided that sufficient food, water, and shelter are available.

Physical Characteristics

The Western Honey Bee is generally reddish-brown to yellowish in colour, with distinct black bands and orange-yellow rings on its abdomen.

It possesses two pairs of wings, a slender waist, and a body covered with fine branched hairs that help collect pollen from flowers.

These hairs are especially important in facilitating pollination, as pollen grains easily attach to them and are transported from one flower to another.

Social Organization

Apis mellifera exhibits eusocial behaviour, representing one of the most advanced forms of social organization found in insects.

Each colony consists of:

  • A single fertile female known as the Queen.

  • Thousands of sterile female Worker Bees.

  • A relatively small number of fertile male bees called Drones.

A single colony can contain tens of thousands of individuals, functioning together as a highly organized social unit.

Stinging Mechanism

Both worker bees and queens possess venom-producing stingers.

Nest Structure

The nests of Apis mellifera display remarkable architectural complexity. They are made up of multiple hexagonal combs constructed from beeswax secreted by worker bees.

Economic Importance

Apis mellifera is commercially exploited for several valuable products, including honey, beeswax, propolis, royal jelly, and bee venom.
