Recently, human skeletal remains excavated from the archaeological site of Rakhigarhi (Haryana) were formally handed over by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to the Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI) for detailed anthropological and biological analysis.
About the Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI)
The Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI) is a government-funded premier research organization that conducts anthropological research on India's diverse populations, cultures, and biological heritage. It is the only Central Government organization dedicated exclusively to anthropological research under the Ministry of Culture.
Established in 1945 under the leadership of Dr. S.C. Roy, a renowned anthropologist, the organization was initially created to study the tribes and castes of India, focusing on their social structure, kinship systems, religious beliefs, economic activities, and cultural practices. Over time, its scope has expanded to encompass the entire spectrum of Indian society, including rural and urban communities, marginalized groups, and the Indian diaspora.
Headquarters and Organisation
The headquarters of AnSI is located in Kolkata, West Bengal. It has regional centres across the country, including Delhi, Lucknow, Shillong, and Pune, enabling research in different geographical and cultural regions.
The institution follows a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together anthropologists, sociologists, linguists, archaeologists, and other allied experts to undertake comprehensive studies on India's human diversity.
Principal Objectives of AnSI
The primary objective of AnSI is to study the biological and cultural diversity of India's population, particularly its tribal communities and other social groups. It also undertakes the examination, preservation, and scientific analysis of human skeletal remains from both ancient and contemporary periods, contributing significantly to archaeological and forensic research.
Another important objective is the collection, preservation, and documentation of tribal arts and crafts, thereby safeguarding India's rich cultural heritage. The institution also functions as a training centre for students and professionals in anthropology and related disciplines, while disseminating knowledge through research publications.

The findings of AnSI are published through several scholarly publications, including the Journal of Anthropological Survey of India, Occasional Papers, and Monographs, which serve as important references for researchers, policymakers, and academicians.
