Recently, new scientific research revealed that aluminium can be made to behave similarly to transition metals such as palladium, rhodium, and platinum. This discovery is considered important because transition metals are widely used as catalysts in industrial and chemical reactions due to their unique electronic properties.

About Aluminium

Aluminium is a chemical element with the symbol Al and atomic number 13.

It is classified as a post-transition metal and is one of the most abundant metals found in the Earth’s crust.

Aluminium is primarily obtained from bauxite ore, which is the chief source of aluminium production worldwide. Because of its abundance, versatility, lightweight nature, and industrial importance, aluminium is considered one of the most strategically important metals in the modern world.

Extraction of Aluminium

The conversion of bauxite into aluminium takes place through a two-stage industrial process involving the Bayer Process and the Hall-Héroult Process.

Bayer Process

In the Bayer Process, raw bauxite ore is first crushed and treated with sodium hydroxide.

This process separates aluminium hydroxide from impurities present in the ore. The extracted aluminium hydroxide is then subjected to strong heating, known as calcination, to produce alumina (Al₂O₃).

Alumina serves as the intermediate raw material for aluminium production.

Hall-Héroult Process

The second stage is the Hall-Héroult Process, in which alumina undergoes electrolytic reduction to produce pure aluminium metal.

This process requires extremely large amounts of electricity, making aluminium production one of the most energy-intensive industrial activities in the world.

Because electricity consumption is very high, the availability of cheap and reliable power is an important factor in aluminium manufacturing.

Properties of Aluminium

Aluminium possesses several important physical and chemical properties that make it highly useful in modern industries.

It is a hard, strong, and silvery-white metal with relatively low density, which makes it lightweight compared to many other metals.

Aluminium has high thermal conductivity and excellent corrosion resistance, allowing it to withstand environmental exposure without rusting easily.

Another important characteristic of aluminium is its high malleability and ductility. It can be easily shaped into sheets, wires, and different structural forms without breaking.

Lightweight and Corrosion Resistance

One of the major advantages of aluminium is its combination of lightweight nature and corrosion resistance.

These properties make it extremely useful in transportation industries where reducing weight helps improve fuel efficiency and performance.

Its resistance to corrosion also makes it suitable for construction, marine use, and outdoor applications.


 

Recyclability of Aluminium

Aluminium is highly recyclable and retains its original properties even after repeated recycling.

An important advantage of recycling aluminium is that it requires only about 5% of the energy needed for primary aluminium production from bauxite ore.

This makes aluminium recycling economically beneficial as well as environmentally sustainable.

Because of this property, aluminium plays an important role in the circular economy and sustainable industrial practices.

Applications of Aluminium

Transportation Sector

Aluminium is widely used in the transportation sector due to its lightweight and strong nature.

It is extensively used in the manufacturing of:

  • Aircraft

  • Automobiles

  • Ships

  • Rail coaches

Its use helps reduce vehicle weight, improve fuel efficiency, and enhance performance.

Household and Packaging Uses

Aluminium is commonly used in household products such as utensils, kitchen appliances, and storage containers.

It is also widely used in packaging materials, especially aluminium foils, because it is lightweight, flexible, and resistant to moisture and contamination.

Infrastructure and Construction

In the construction sector, aluminium is used in the production of:

  • Doors

  • Windows

  • Screens

  • Cladding materials

Its corrosion resistance and durability make it suitable for long-lasting infrastructure applications.

Electrical Applications

Aluminium is also a good conductor of electricity.

Because it is lighter and cheaper than copper, aluminium is frequently used in electric transmission lines and power distribution systems.

Strategic and Industrial Importance

Aluminium has major strategic importance in sectors such as:

  • Defence

  • Aerospace

  • Nuclear industries

  • Advanced manufacturing

Its strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and versatility make it essential for modern industrial and technological development.

Countries with strong aluminium production capabilities often gain advantages in manufacturing, defence preparedness, and infrastructure growth.
