About Aghanashini River

The term Aghanashini literally means “Remover of Sins,” reflecting its cultural as well as ecological significance. One of the most striking features of this river is that it is among the very few free-flowing rivers in the world, meaning that it flows without major dams or significant human obstruction, which enhances its ecological value.
Rainfall and Tributaries
The Aghanashini basin receives heavy orographic rainfall due to its location in the Western Ghats. The annual rainfall varies significantly, ranging from about 2500 mm in the plains to more than 6300 mm in the hilly regions. The river is fed by several tributaries, including Donihalla, Chandika Hole, Masti Mane Halla, and Benne Hole, which contribute to maintaining its perennial flow.
