Yes, you can give the UPSC interview in Hindi. English is not compulsory for the Personality Test. What matters is whether you can understand questions, organise your thoughts and express balanced views clearly.
Official Language Rules
The language available for your interview depends on the medium selected for the Civil Services Main Examination.
If you write the Main Examination in an Indian language, you may choose the same Indian language, Hindi or English for the interview. If you write the Main Examination in English, you may choose English, Hindi or the Indian language selected for the compulsory Indian Language Paper. Candidates exempted from that paper must choose either Hindi or English.
Your preferred interview language must be entered in the Detailed Application Form. Check this entry carefully before submitting the form because it determines the medium arranged for your Personality Test.
Will a Hindi UPSC Interview Affect My Marks?
No advantage or disadvantage is attached to Hindi. The interview board assesses your suitability for a career in public service, not your command of decorative English.
The UPSC interview carries 275 marks and has no minimum qualifying marks. The board looks for mental alertness, clear and logical expression, balanced judgement, social awareness, leadership potential and intellectual and moral integrity.
Choose Hindi or English
Choose Hindi when it allows you to think naturally and respond without translating every sentence in your mind. Do not select English only because it appears more formal. At the same time, do not choose Hindi because you believe the board will ask easier questions.
The difficulty and standard of the interview do not depend on language. Select the medium in which you can discuss your Detailed Application Form, graduation subject, current affairs, hometown, hobbies and administrative situations confidently.
Can I Use English Words During the Interview?
You do not need to force highly Sanskritised Hindi. Familiar terms such as GDP, artificial intelligence, climate change, fiscal deficit and constitutional morality may be used when they communicate the idea accurately. Keep the main flow of your response in Hindi and avoid switching languages so frequently that the answer becomes unclear.
Begin UPSC Interview Preparation in Hindi
Start your UPSC interview preparation with the Detailed Application Form. Prepare likely questions about your education, work experience, home district, state, optional subject, achievements, interests and service preferences.
Read current affairs daily and explain an issue aloud in simple Hindi. Practise answers with a structure: begin with a direct response, present two or three relevant points, acknowledge another viewpoint when necessary and finish with a practical conclusion.
Create a short glossary of administrative, economic, constitutional and international-relations terms. Record your answers to notice unnecessary repetition, excessive speed, weak pronunciation or long pauses. Do not memorise complete scripts because follow-up questions require natural thinking.
UPSC Mock Interview Help
A good UPSC mock interview helps you experience board-style questions, interruptions and unexpected follow-ups. Choose a panel that can conduct the session in Hindi and provide specific feedback on knowledge, clarity, body language and judgement.
Attend a limited number of mocks. Too many conflicting suggestions can make your behaviour artificial. Use repeated feedback to correct genuine weaknesses while keeping your personality natural.
