To introduce yourself in a UPSC interview, give a clear 45–60 second summary of your name, hometown, education, work experience, meaningful achievements, and genuine interests. Keep it connected to your Detailed Application Form (DAF), speak naturally, and avoid turning it into a memorized speech.

Self-Introduction Important in the UPSC Interview

“Tell us about yourself” looks simple, but it helps the board understand how clearly you think, what you consider important, and whether you are comfortable discussing your own journey. The UPSC personality test is not meant to reward dramatic answers. It assesses suitability for public service through qualities such as clarity, balance, awareness, judgement, and honest communication.

A good introduction creates a positive beginning and gives the interview board useful areas for further discussion. It also gives the board a clear path to explore your experiences without immediately forcing unrelated details into the opening answer. A weak introduction may sound lengthy, artificial, or disconnected from the DAF.

Should You Include

Use the following order:

1. Name and Present Status

Begin with your name only after the board asks you to introduce yourself. Then state whether you are a student, graduate, working professional, or preparing full-time.

2. Hometown and Background

Mention your city, district, or state briefly. Add one meaningful connection only when relevant, such as growing up in a border district, agricultural family, industrial town, or culturally diverse area.

3. Educational Qualification

State your degree, subject, and institution. Instead of listing marks, explain one academic interest, project, or learning experience that shaped your thinking.

4. Work Experience or Major Activity

Working candidates should mention their role and key responsibility. Fresh graduates may discuss an internship, volunteering experience, college responsibility, sport, or project that shows initiative and learning.

5. Hobbies and Interests

Mention only genuine interests written in your DAF. Avoid decorative hobbies that you cannot discuss confidently.

Sample Self-Introduction for UPSC Interview

Example –

“Good morning, Sir/Ma’am. I am Riya Sharma from Jaipur, Rajasthan. I completed my graduation in Political Science from Delhi University. During college, I volunteered with an education initiative for schoolchildren, which helped me understand the practical challenges of access and implementation. After graduation, I worked as a research associate, where I developed skills in data analysis, teamwork, and structured communication. I enjoy long-distance running and reading about urban governance. These experiences have made me more disciplined, observant, and interested in solving public problems.”

Mistakes

Do not repeat your complete DAF, give unnecessary family details, use difficult vocabulary, or make claims such as “I am a born leader.” Avoid giving a long explanation of why you want to become an IAS officer unless asked. Never mention an achievement or hobby that you cannot defend through follow-up questions.

Practice Your Introduction

Write three versions lasting 30, 45, and 60 seconds. Record yourself and check your speed, voice, posture, facial expression, and clarity. A UPSC mock interview can reveal which statements sound vague or rehearsed.
