The Aranmula Uthrattathi Vallamkali is one of the oldest traditional boat races of Kerala. It is held annually on the Uthrattathi asterism in the Malayalam month of Chingam (August–September) on the Pamba River in Pathanamthitta district.
Religious Significance
The event is closely associated with the Aranmula Sree Parthasarathy Temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna. It is considered a religious offering and forms an important part of the temple traditions and Onam celebrations.
Legend Behind the Race
According to tradition, the event originated when local snake boats came to protect the Thiruvona Thoni, which carried offerings for the Thiruvonam feast at the temple, from attackers. The tradition symbolises community unity, devotion and collective protection of cultural traditions.
Palliyodams – Sacred Snake Boats
The boats used in the event are called Palliyodams. They are distinct from ordinary snake boats, being taller and elaborately decorated. More than 100 oarsmen row each boat in coordinated movements while singing traditional Vanchippattu (boat songs).
Cultural Heritage
The Vallamkali represents Kerala’s rich traditions of boat-making, music, performing arts and community participation. Traditional songs associated with the event include Kuchelavritham, Bheeshmaparvam and Santhanagopalam.
Aranmula
Aranmula is a heritage village situated on the banks of the Pamba River. It is also famous for the GI-tagged Aranmula Kannadi, a unique traditional metal mirror of Kerala.
Glaw Lake in Lohit district, Arunachal Pradesh, has been designated as India’s 101st Ramsar Site under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. It is also the first Ramsar Site of Arunachal Pradesh. The designation was announced by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on 3 August 2026.
About Glaw Lake
Glaw Lake is a freshwater lake located in the Eastern Himalayas, within the landscape of Kamlang Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary. It lies at an elevation of approximately 1,168 metres.
The lake is fed by perennial mountain streams and is surrounded by dense vegetation, making it an important freshwater ecosystem and biodiversity-rich wetland.
Biodiversity
The lake and its catchment support significant floral and faunal diversity. The area has recorded more than 150 tree species and 49 orchid species.
It also supports important wildlife, including endangered species such as the White-bellied Heron and Clouded Leopard.
Importance
The designation strengthens the conservation of wetlands, freshwater biodiversity and Himalayan ecosystems. It also contributes to climate resilience and the sustainable management of freshwater resources.
Ramsar Convention on Wetlands
The Ramsar Convention is an intergovernmental treaty that provides a framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.
It was adopted in 1971 at Ramsar, Iran, and came into force in 1975. It was the first intergovernmental treaty focused specifically on a particular ecosystem—wetlands.
Three Main Pillars
Conservation and wise use of wetlands designated as being of international importance.
Wise use of all wetlands within the territory of each contracting party.
International cooperation on shared wetlands, transboundary wetland systems and migratory species.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has launched a revamped version of TRAI MyCall, a mobile application that allows telecom consumers to directly rate and report their voice-calling experience.
About TRAI MyCall
TRAI MyCall is a citizen-centric digital platform that enables consumers to provide real-time feedback on voice-call quality along with relevant network parameters.
The feedback is shared with TRAI and Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) in anonymised form. This helps service providers identify network-related problems and take targeted corrective measures, thereby improving the overall Quality of Service (QoS).
The platform also supports evidence-based regulatory oversight by helping TRAI assess the Quality of Experience (QoE) from the perspective of actual consumers.
Key Features of the Revamped App
1–5 Star Rating: Consumers can instantly rate their voice-call experience.
Issue Reporting: Users can report call drops, echo, audio delay, cross-connection, voice breaking, one-way audio and delayed call connection.
Automatic Feedback: Post-call prompts make it easier for consumers to submit feedback.
Feedback History: Users can view their ratings and feedback history through an interactive map.
Coverage Test: Allows users to assess signal strength.
Multilingual Support: The application provides multilingual services through Bhashini.
QoS vs QoE
Quality of Service (QoS) refers to the technical performance of a telecom network, such as network coverage, stability and call performance.
Quality of Experience (QoE) reflects the actual experience perceived by consumers while using telecom services. TRAI MyCall helps incorporate this consumer perspective into regulatory assessment.
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)
Establishment
TRAI is the statutory regulatory authority responsible for regulating India's telecommunications sector. It was established under the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Act, 1997.
Objectives
TRAI aims to promote the growth and development of telecommunications, create a fair and transparent environment for service providers and protect the interests of consumers.
Major Functions
TRAI:
Regulates tariffs for telecom services.
Prescribes standards for Quality of Service (QoS).
Regulates aspects related to mobile number portability and DTH services.
Makes recommendations regarding licences and permissions.
Protects consumers against unfair and deceptive practices.
Monitors compliance with its regulations and can impose penalties for violations.
Composition
TRAI consists of:
One Chairperson
Up to two full-time members
Two part-time members
Members are appointed by the Central Government and normally serve for three years or until the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.
TDSAT
The Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) was established through an amendment to the TRAI Act.
TDSAT handles adjudicatory and dispute-resolution functions that were earlier performed by TRAI. It deals with disputes involving licensors, licensees, service providers and consumer groups, and hears appeals against directions, decisions and orders of TRAI.
